Long term care insurance covers personal care for individuals who are unable to care for themselves because they cannot perform at least two of the activities of daily living or are severely cognitively impaired. For the most part, long term care is not covered by other types of insurance. Most long term care insurance policies cover care at home, in assisted living facilities and in nursing homes.
The premium for a long term care insurance policy is based upon what benefits will be provided, the amount of the benefit provided per day, the length of the benefit period and the length of the elimination period. Also, premiums are based on age and health. The older you are, the more expensive the cost of this type of insurance. And, certain health conditions will prevent you from being able to buy long term care insurance.
